My current project examines the political and social dimensions of the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy in Chile. I analyze the policies and discourses around energy transition at the national scale, paired with a multi-sited ethnography of renewable energy in communities in the Atacama Desert. I find that while Chile is advancing towards lowering emissions, renewable energy largely serves to 'green’ the profile of the mining sector, producing limited benefits for communities at the sites of production. My work contributes to debates on how energy policy might work to advance not only decarbonization but energy justice.
