Alison Bates

Dr. Bates researches social acceptance of renewable energy systems. Her expertise is in developing statistically robust surveys and spatial models to inform energy siting and decision-making. She also uses qualitative, community-engaged research to develop metrics and priorities for equity and justice in the energy transition, prioritizing communities that lack political power. Dr. Bates is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at Colby College. She earned her Ph.D. in Marine Policy at the University of Delaware Center for Carbon-free Power Integration and has also worked with community-based NGOs to support public land conservation in addition to her academic appointments.
